Why study in Egypt?
Egypt's system combines public universities, private universities, national (ahliya) universities, technological universities and international branch campuses, alongside Al-Azhar University, which runs its own admissions. The Supreme Council of Universities oversees public universities and is the body that recognises foreign degrees as equivalent; private and national universities each have their own council. Most bachelor's degrees take four years; engineering and dentistry take five, medicine is five years of study followed by two years of compulsory internship, and pharmacy (PharmD) is five years of study. Many programmes are taught in Arabic, while medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and engineering are usually taught in English, as are most private and branch-campus programmes; a few use French or German.
Tuition fees in Egypt
International students pay the fees set for non-Egyptian nationals, charged in US dollars and different from what Egyptian students pay. Public and national universities apply the international-student rates set for each university and faculty, while private universities and branch campuses set their own. The Ministry's admission portal also charges service fees that are not refunded, a one-time registration fee usually applies on first enrolment, and an older secondary certificate can add a fee for each year since it was issued. Some nationalities have had reduced public-university rates, so check the current rules before relying on a quoted figure.
Admission requirements in Egypt
Undergraduate admission is based on the secondary-school certificate. Each certificate type is converted to a percentage and compared with minimum scores set for international students by faculty, so the faculties open to you depend on your certificate as well as your grades. Medical, dental and pharmacy faculties require specific science subjects, engineering requires mathematics, and some certificates, such as the American diploma, also need a standardised test result. Postgraduate applicants need a previous degree that the Supreme Council of Universities recognises as equivalent. Prepare legalised originals of every certificate and transcript: legalised by the issuing country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the Egyptian embassy or consulate there, or through that country's embassy in Cairo and Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
How to apply to study in Egypt
Non-Egyptian applicants to public, private and national universities apply through the Ministry's Study in Egypt portal (admission.study-in-egypt.gov.eg), run by the Central Administration for International Students' Affairs; a private university's own form does not replace this nomination. Al-Azhar University uses its own international-student platform. After the initial nomination, service fees must be paid and the legalised originals delivered by the stated deadline, or the nomination lapses. Every file also passes a security review, and portal fees are not refunded.
Student visa and residence in Egypt
The entry route depends on nationality: some students need a visa from an Egyptian embassy before travelling, while others can enter on the visa available to them and should give study as the purpose. Egypt's e-visa portal issues tourist visas only. After enrolment, students obtain a study residence permit from the Ministry of Interior's Passports, Immigration and Nationality Administration and renew it every year, with a re-entry visa needed before trips abroad; the nomination is cancelled if residence is refused. Visa and enrolment files usually include a medical certificate with an HIV test, and some nationalities must register their passport within seven days of arrival, so check the current rules for your nationality before travelling.
Scholarships for study in Egypt
Egyptian government awards, such as cultural-exchange and Foreign Ministry scholarships, are usually requested through the student's own embassy or government and processed on the Ministry's portal within a fixed window each year. Al-Azhar allocates its own awards, and some private universities offer discounts. An award may waive tuition for all years or only some, so an admission offer does not include funding unless the award is confirmed in writing.
Working during and after study in Egypt
Foreign nationals need a work permit from Egypt's Ministry of Labour before taking paid work, and a study residence permit is not a work permit. Do not accept a job until your status allows it, and plan your budget without relying on part-time income.
Cost of living in Egypt
Rent and daily costs are paid in Egyptian pounds (EGP), while tuition and Ministry fees are charged in US dollars. Prices have changed quickly in recent years, so recheck your budget close to departure. Greater Cairo, especially New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed, usually costs more than Alexandria, Mansoura, Assiut and other regional university cities. Include housing deposits, transport, food, medical tests, health cover and the yearly residence-permit fees.
Student cities in Egypt
Greater Cairo, including Giza, New Cairo, 6th of October City and the New Administrative Capital, has the largest concentration of universities. Alexandria, Mansoura, Zagazig, Tanta, Assiut and Ismailia are home to long-established public universities, several with private or national universities nearby, while New Alamein hosts newer national universities. Costs and campus settings differ from city to city.
Student accommodation in Egypt
Public universities run student residences (university cities), and some have wings for international students, but places are allocated each year under each university's own rules and are not guaranteed. Many private universities offer on-campus or partner housing, and many students rent shared flats instead. Agree the contract, deposit and utilities in writing and see the property before paying.
